Description

Gingery Ground Beef Soboro Donburi is a flavorful Japanese-inspired dish featuring ground beef cooked with fresh ginger, soy sauce, and sweet brown sugar, mixed with tender peas and served over rice for a comforting and satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound 90/10 ground beef
  • ¼ cup low sodium soy sauce or tamari
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon minced peeled fresh ginger
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 cups cooked rice, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients: Gather and measure all the ingredients including ground beef, soy sauce, brown sugar, minced ginger, frozen peas, and cooked rice if using.
  2. Cook the Beef Mixture: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground beef, soy sauce, ¼ cup water, brown sugar, and minced ginger. Break up the meat with a wooden spoon and cook until it is browned and cooked through, about 8 minutes.
  3. Add the Peas: Stir in the frozen peas and continue to cook the mixture until most of the liquid has evaporated and the peas are heated through, about 5 more minutes.
  4. Serve: Spoon the gingery ground beef mixture over bowls of cooked rice if desired, and serve warm.

Notes

  • Use low sodium soy sauce to control salt levels; tamari is a good gluten-free alternative.
  • Adjust the amount of ginger according to your taste preferences for more or less zing.
  • Adding a beaten egg and cooking until crumbly can make this dish more authentic to soboro style.
  • Frozen peas can be substituted with fresh peas or edamame for variation.
  • Serve with steamed vegetables or a side salad for a complete meal.
