Description

Quick & Easy Bang Bang Shrimp features crispy fried shrimp coated in a creamy, tangy, sweet chili mayo sauce with a hint of spice. This addictive dish is ready in just 26 minutes, perfect for a flavorful appetizer or snack that’s sure to impress.

Ingredients

Scale

Shrimp and Coating

  • 1 lb Jumbo Shrimp (peeled and deveined)
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or substitute with 1 cup whole milk and 1 tbsp lemon juice, let sit for 5 minutes)
  • 3/4 cup cornstarch (or potato starch/tapioca starch)
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 3/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup vegetable oil (or any neutral oil for frying)

Bang Bang Sauce

  • 1/2 cup Japanese mayonnaise (or substitute with regular mayo)
  • 1/4 cup sweet chili sauce
  • 2 tbsp sriracha (adjust for spiciness)

Garnish

  • 1 green onion (finely chopped)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Shrimp: In a medium bowl, combine peeled and deveined shrimp with buttermilk. Let the shrimp soak for 10 minutes to tenderize.
  2. Make Bang Bang Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together Japanese mayonnaise, sweet chili sauce, and sriracha. Set aside.
  3. Mix Coating: In a shallow bowl or baking sheet, combine cornstarch, salt, garlic powder, and black pepper. Whisk to mix evenly.
  4. Coat Shrimp: Dredge each shrimp in the cornstarch mixture, covering both sides thoroughly.
  5. Heat Oil: In a large 10-inch skillet or heavy-bottom pan, heat vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350 degrees F or is hot enough for frying.
  6. Fry Shrimp: Fry shrimp in batches to avoid overcrowding, cooking each side for about 1.5 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Remove shrimp and drain on a wire rack or paper towels.
  7. Toss with Sauce: Transfer the crispy shrimp to a large bowl. Pour the Bang Bang sauce over the shrimp and gently toss to coat evenly.
  8. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle finely chopped green onions over the shrimp and serve immediately. Enjoy!

Notes

  • To make this dish gluten free, substitute cornstarch with potato or tapioca starch and use gluten-free sweet chili sauce.
  • For an air fryer alternative, coat shrimp as directed, spray with oil, and air fry at 400 degrees F for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • Adjust spiciness by varying the amount of sriracha to your taste.
  • Use fresh jumbo shrimp for best texture and flavor.
  • Ensure oil is hot before frying to get extra crispy shrimp without excess oil absorption.
